On Saturday we celebrated our anniversary. We went to Lagoon (an amusement park). My sister Haley and her husband Greg were nice enough to watch Cheyenne all day while we partied like it was 1999.
I haven't been to an amusement park since I was like 8 when I went to Six Flags in Kentucky. Back then I actually called my mom to come get me because the rides were too scary. She said, "It's okay, I don't like roller coasters either," so I knew I was in good company.
I'm older and wiser now, right? Well let's find out...
We went on our first ride, "Roller Coaster" which is actually the oldest and ricketiest ride in the park (read: not that bad). I wasn't nervous as we stood in line, as my childhood fears were long since forgotten. We started climbing up a hill, no big deal. Then before I know it we were zipping around and up and down and I was screaming at the top of my lungs while my life flashed before my eyes. Ben was laughing at me the whole time, as he had no idea I was such a scaredy-cat.
He somehow convinced me to get in line for the ride "Wicked," and later explained it was actually the scariest ride in the park. But being the kind husband he is, he gave me a couple of pointers that really helped calm my nerves. He explained how roller coasters worked; that centripetal force holds you in your seat when you go upside down, and that inertia is what makes you go so fast after you make a climb. It all made sense to me, and I felt a little safer. But the best advice he gave? Close your eyes and pretend like you are flying.
I conquered Wicked, with my eyes closed of course, but I can say that I actually "did it." And we went on a few more rides, and by the end of the day I was enjoying myself. It was so fun, just the two of us, holding hands and laughing and joking. It was really to perfect setting to spend time together and rejuvenate our marriage.
