What service looks like

I sighed. Frank had a fever, and that meant I wouldn't be able to make a short stop to check in on someone for church. I'm beginning to recognize how much true joy and happiness arise from serving others, and so I was really bummed that I wouldn't be able to experience that today.

December Goals + November check-in

I was a little discouraged as the sun set on the last day of November. My PowerSheets did not show much progress, I thought. But at the end of each month you have the chance to reflect (on the Cultivate Gratitude page) and I was reminded of why I am engaging in this, focusing on the things I had accomplished and moving forward.

The relationship between reading your scriptures and the power to fight sin

I've wondered for quite some time what the relationship is between reading your scriptures and fighting against sin. I'm not an expert, and I only have my experience to share with you.

November Goals

I plan to do a whole separate post on PowerSheets (a goal setting workbook that leaves room for you to not be perfect!), but for now I wanted to get my goals for November down.

Jane Manning's Faith

We've been reading the story of Jane Manning from a series in The Friend magazine. I've been so inspired by her faith as she walked 800 miles to Nauvoo, Il through snow and ice and cracked and bleeding feet. Yet through it all she was exceedingly upbeat and optimistic.

The secret about big families

I don't consider our four children a 'big family' (since I come from a family of 11!), but just the fact that I hope to someday grow our family is considered odd to a lot of the people I interact with.

Raising the Righteous Generation

No man knows, even the angels in Heaven, when Jesus Christ will return to the earth, but we are counseled to always be prepared. What if it's our kids that will welcome the Savior when the Second Coming arrives?

Preparing for General Conference

I recently read an article about preparing our families and children for General Conference. I picked out some of my favorite ideas and recorded them here (you can see the full text of the article here).

Tender Impressions from the Women's Session

I like to listen to the General Women's Session alone in my room, because it becomes a deeply personal and spiritual experience for me.

Waiting

We're going on our third year living in this rental house. While it's not what I had planned, it feels like this is the house we are supposed to be living in right now. But for a future-planning person like myself I have spent many days moping about, frustrated, and hoping for something to change and for this period of waiting and unsettled-ness to be over.

How I can have a successful summer as a stay-at-home mom...next year

This summer was different than summers' past. I learned and grew a lot and the end results were fruitful, but the actual doing was quite messy and frustrating to me.

The Invisible Arms of Prayer

One afternoon, several years ago in Provo, my brother Derek came over. He had just gotten the devastating news that he didn't get a job that he was really hoping to get. Our usually animated conversations turned into one-word questions and responses. We were both sad that this prospect for the future, his hopes and dreams, had been crushed. I listened. We listed all the things that would have been bad about the job (as one is wont to do when things don't go our way!). We tried to 'reframe' his future, trying to think of other, equally exciting opportunities. I convinced him to watch a short clip from Studio C, a sketch comedy group love that we both share, and the laughs helped dissipate some of those hurt feelings. Derek went home feeling lighter, as did I, grateful that I could listen and help in some small way.

Visiting the Gabrielsens

The last stop on our trip was to visit my sister Bethany on the way home (kind of) back to Indiana. Haley came down from from Idaho, and Whitney was still with us. We went on a great sisters walk the morning we were there. Love my sisters!!

A quick pit stop at Mt. Rushmore + Early Morning Driving

When we knew we would be driving to Montana this summer, I thought it would be fun to take a pit stop at Mt. Rushmore since it was pretty much on the way from where we live.

My immediate family (my parents, my 10 siblings and their spouses, and all the grandkids) got together for an awesome family reunion while we were out West. We rented out a lodge near my brother's house in Montana which was so fun.

Going to the Sun

I haven't climbed many mountains in my life, but I did get the chance to climb a mountain in a car once. The road is aptly named "Going-to-the-Sun Road" in Glacier National Park.

The Day our Family turned 8 years old

written for June 19th, 2017
Today is our eighth anniversary. Eight years ago, I woke up on this day in our newlywed apartment with my mom. A special, sacred day, the beginning of a new life, it was a day to celebrate. I wanted to look my best for you, and Mom and I waited for the makeup and hair artist to arrive.

When Children Serve

"I want breakfast, Mommy. Mommy, what's for breakfast?" I can hear Delaney whining this morning. I shhh her as I come out of the bedroom, closing the bedroom door behind me.

When I didn't like motherhood

I spent the whole last week feeling fed up with motherhood. I just couldn't do it anymore! "Please," I pleaded in prayer, "give me clarity." I felt desperate. I needed some solace, some direction.

What's so Wonderful about Primary

It seems a common attitude that you can only have "so much" of children.
